Three of four bandits who were on trial on two counts each of robbery under arms have been jailed
for six years each.
Two of the men, notorious bandits Tameshwar Khemraj, called “Ramboo”, 25, of Lot 171 Nigg Corentyne; Adbussulum Azimulla, called “Sato”, 29, of Lot 183 Hampshire, Corentyne, Berbice, were in court. The third accused, Deon Fraser, called “Bucko”, 23, of Adelphi, East Canje Berbice was absent after being granted bail. He was sentenced in his absence. The fourth man Deodat Seecharran, called “Pop Corn”, 19, of Edinburgh East Bank Berbice and of Adelphi, East Canje was shot dead in a shootout with the police.
They appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Reliance Magistrate’s Court and were found guilty on both charges. They were sentenced to three years jail on each of the charges. The convicts had first appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo and were each granted bail in the sum of $600,000.
They were accused of on Saturday June 2, last, at Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice while armed with guns, cutlasses and knives, robbed Melissa Fernandes of a quantity of cash, cell phones, and a quantity of jewelry to the value of $550,000 which brought a total value of $987,000.
They were also charged with on the same day, time and place, having robbed Inderjeet “Chris” Persaud of two gold chains valued $450,000, four gold rings value $200,000, one gold bangle value $200,000, one stainless steel band value $30,000 and $11,000 to the value of $891,000.
According to Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter around 19:00 hrs on the day in question, the couple was at home with their eight-year-old daughter. They were about to close up his barber shop when four unmasked men all of Indian descent and armed with an AK 47 rifle, a shot gun and two knives barged into his yard and started to beat him and his wife mercilessly, all the time demanding cash and jewelry.
The men then escaped through the backyard.
The bandits were tracked down and captured in a house at Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice.
Police were informed and quickly descended on the house at Edinburgh where the four men were caught inside having fun and using drugs. They were taken into custody.
Two cars were also apprehended and the drivers were taken into custody. One of the cars (PPP 3149) was rented while the other car HB 8647 operated in the Corentyne area.
The prosecution had asked for the maximum penalty to be imposed on the men who are all notorious bandits.
He said that the prosecution case was not challenged by the defence in any way. Fraser, after he was granted bail, did not return for his trial. Azimulla, was on the run for more than eight years on a murder charge. He was subsequently charged with the capital offence and remanded to jail.
Khemraj is currently serving a four-year sentence for robbery under arms and has a number of other charges pending.
