Deputy Superintendent of Police Irvin Trotz, along with officials of the Guyana Road
Safety Council (GRSC) recently visited road accident victims at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), as part of Road Safety Month activities.
According to the Deputy Superintendent, the visit served as a platform for police and road safety officials to sympathize with road accident patients and ensure that they are satisfied with police investigations on their matter.
Trotz said that the team visited four patients at the institution.
“Road safety is everyone’s business” the police official said as he urged all road users to “be on the lookout for the vulnerable.”
GRSC Coordinator, Ramona Doorgen, noted that 120 fatalities and over 300 injuries have already been recorded this year locally.
She expressed hope that road users can keep these figures at a minimum by adhering to the rules of road safety.
President of the Georgetown Road Safety Association, Victor Graham, reiterated that road safety is everybody’s business, whether one is walking, riding or driving on the roadways.
He said that drivers must exercise patience and limited alcohol consumption while driving on the roadways, in order to significantly reduce the number of accidents.
Chairman of the West Demerara Road Safety Council, Shahab Hack, expressed similar sentiments.
“Too many people are drinking and driving. It is not the fault of the police, the road safety council’s fault or even the government’s fault. People are just making bad choices and they need a reminder,” he said.
Hack made a humble appeal to road users to observe the 5 C’s of road safety; Care, Caution, Courtesy, Consideration and Common Sense.
He said that adhering to these “little things” can make a big difference.
He explained that a large number of road accident patients have continued to receive corrective surgeries “more than one year” after their accident occurred. This, he said, is due to the severity of road accidents, which also contributes to unemployment.
