Shawn Charles and Alexis Welcome appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates Court yesterday to answer to a charge of unlawful possession of an illegal substance for the purpose of trafficking.
The charge stated that on November 12, at Cross Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, the accused had in their possession two grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court that on the day in question, police acting on information received went to Leopold and Cross Streets where they found the defendants. They searched the premises, and during the search the male defendant (Charles) was in the living room, while the female was in the bedroom. Cocaine was found in a plate in the bedroom where the female defendant was. Charles admitted to the cocaine being his and was taken to the narcotic branch of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The substance was weighed in their presence and amounted to two grams. The accused were then charged.
The court heard that Charles is 38 years old, a father of two, and a labourer by profession.
Charles pleaded guilty to the charge and was jailed for three years. He was also fine $30,000.
The labourer took full responsibility, he told the Chief Magistrate that “it was mine…It had nothing to do with she…I was selling cocaine at the time”.
Alexis Welcome is a shopkeeper who hails from One Mile Turn Soesdyke/ Linden Highway. She pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison. The matter has been transferred to Magistrate Judy Latchman’s court for statements to be heard on November 21.
