Seven children including a three-month-old baby are among nine person left homeless after fire of unknown origin on Tuesday afternoon destroyed their two-storey wood and concrete home. The house situated at Lot 99 Church Street, Corriverton was completely gutted.
The seven children were from the two single parents who were sharing the house.
Basmattie Harrynauth, 29, is a mother of four aged seven, four, two and three months. She shared the house with her cousin Salima Nankishore, 31, a mother of three aged 11, two and one year. The women are fish vendors at the Skeldon market.
According to Harrynauth, the fire began at approximately 14:30 hrs. The woman stated that at the time of the fire no one was at home. She said that the children had not returned from school and she was at her mother in another house at the front of the yard.
The woman said that the house was given to her by her mother. It was well furnished with beds, televisions, wardrobe, and three piece suites among other household amenities. They did not get to save anything and were left with only the clothes on their backs. The woman said that she could not give an estimate of their losses, but puts it at millions of dollars.
She first learnt of the fire when they were alerted by her neighbours, by the time they could get to the house the fire was already raging.
The house does not have electricity and they are baffled about the cause of the fire.
A fire engine from the Corriverton Fire Station and one from the Skeldon Estate responded to the fire, but were too late to save the building.
They are appealing for assistance.
