Following months of complaining, residents of South Ruimveldt have been promised that
they will finally be able to have proper use of the damaged David Rose Street again.
The area was subjected to construction works near Cane View Avenue, the southernmost section of South Ruimveldt. In order to access the construction site, many of the trucks employed to transport heavy materials utilised David Rose Street. This resulted in sections of the street being “broken up”.
Vehicles then resorted to driving off the road into the pedestrian walkway in order to make their way through the street.
“The road bruck up ever since they start construction at the back,” said an annoyed resident of the area. “The cars in here can’t even move properly on the road. They got to drive off the road to reach where they going.”
The road has been a hazard for drivers and pedestrians alike. Persons on foot must be prepared to avoid oncoming vehicles at anytime. Drivers also come dangerously close to a nearby trench, while trying to avoid the broken sections of the road.
To resolve the issue, local businessman Michael Vieira, of Houston Sugar Estates has pledged to rehabilitate David Rose Street. He approximated that the project would cost $1.5 million, if approval is given by the City Engineer.
When asked what could have caused the road to deteriorate to such a state the businessman explained, “It could be a number of reasons; not only the trucks. It could be the road old and it doesn’t have no proper steel.”
Vieira added that while his company has ongoing construction, there are also other businesses whose trucks use the road to transport heavy materials.
However, he has still vowed that he will take it upon himself to repair the damaged David Rose Street. (Nicholas Peters)
