The United States (US) Embassy in Georgetown has warned its citizens to avoid the
Parliament Building where demonstrations by the Opposition parties took place yesterday.
The protest actions followed announcements by President Donald Ramotar to suspend Parliament in face of a no-confidence motion by the Opposition that was supposed to be debated yesterday. The President held true to his announcement last week to suspend Parliament, sparking widespread condemnation from especially the Opposition.
According to the embassy, approximately 75 persons took part in the demonstrations yesterday. “U.S. citizens are reminded that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.”
The embassy, in the statement, said it is recommending that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Guyana enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Programme (STEP). “STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.”
US citizens were also asked to regularly monitor the State Department’s website, to keep abreast with current travel warnings, alerts and the worldwide cautions.
