Delroy Welford was placed on $250,000 bail for his involvement in an accident, which resulted in the death of a woman earlier this month. The former air conditioning technician, of 77 Cummings Lane, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving yesterday.
It is alleged that on November 7, last, Welford drove motor car, PPP 9521, in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of 45-year old Carol Overton. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to Police Prosecutor, Bharrat Mangru, on the day in question, the defendant was proceeding north along the Mocha access road while the deceased Carol Overton was walking along the road. The Prosecutor said that the defendant told police that a vehicle was approaching in the opposite direction with bright lights on; the defendant claimed that he swerved to avoid hitting the vehicle when he collided with the victim.
Attorney-at-Law Roger Yearwood, who represented Welford, told the court that his client is not a flight risk that he cooperated with the police during the investigation, and assisted in taking the deceased to the Georgetown Public Hospital Cooperation (GPHC) where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Prosecutor Mangru had no objections to bail but requested that conditions be applied.
Chief Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry upheld the Prosecutor’s request and ordered that the defendant lodge his passport and report to the Providence Police Station every fortnight until the matter is completed.
