Ogle Residents Roy and Sherry Rupchand along with their children and grandchildren
are now homeless after an unexpected fire destroyed their house Sunday morning.
The fire started around 10:00 hours and quickly consumed the two storey building, causing the family to lose almost all of their belongings.
According to the house owner Roy Rupchand, he and his family were at a Mandir not too far from their home that morning when someone informed him that his house was on fire. Rushing home as quickly as he could, he managed to save only a few items.
On the scene, the owner told Kaieteur News that he was at a loss as to what could have caused the fire since he didn’t leave anything on before departing for the Mandir.
Neighbour Abekie Dublin, said that she was at home when she noticed flames coming from the upper flat of the house.
She said that she raised an alarm and someone else later called the fire department.
Dublin said, “We see the fire start blazing upstairs…blazing!”
Residents said that the fire originated from an electrical wire leading to the house.
The Guyana Fire Service arrived quickly on the scene but after a few minutes, they ran out of water that was contained in the tank of the fire tender.
Firefighters then had a torrid time trying to source water from nearby trenches, which were obviously dry as a result of the prolonged dry season.
Neighbours assisted with buckets of water from tanks in their yards, but by then the fire was out of control.
The firefighters eventually managed to access water from a trench located a few hundred yards away from the scene of the fire and it was the residents who helped to make it possible.
Frustrated neighbours shouted their dismay. “This is what Guyana is…every time they got a fire they ain’t got enough water.”
Firefighters, with the assistance of public-spirited persons eventually managed to extinguish the flames, but not before severe damage was done, with the upper flat being completely destroyed.
