The three ex-policemen who were nabbed in a car around noon on Monday on the West Coast Berbice, following an alleged robbery of a Cambio dealer, has been remanded to jail.
The men are Darren Bentick, 22, of 142 Cooper Street, Albouystown; Nigel Quely, 21, of Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara; and David Alder, 22, of Zorg-en-Hoop Housing Scheme, Blairmont West Bank Berbice.
On Thursday they appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court on a charge of robbery and were remanded to jail.
They are charged with robbing moneychanger Heeralall of $1.9M that included a quantity of foreign currencies.
According to Prosecutor Corporal Orin Joseph, on the day in question, Heralall was on his way home on his motor cycle when in the vicinity of Cotton Tree, his path was blocked by a motor car carrying the three men.
They were in a white heavily-tinted motor car which had on false number plates. When they stopped they lowered the windows and shouted “police”, before showing the man a badge. Heeralall attempted to drive away, but his path was blocked. Two of the men came out and accosted the man telling him that he is wanted at the police station. His bag with the money was taken away and he was told to walk to the car. However, as he was making his way to the vehicle accompanied by two of the men his escorts sprinted away, reentered the car and the vehicle sped away.
The police were informed and mounted a roadblock at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice, where the men were intercepted. The thieves protested their innocence and stated that they were police officers. However, they were arrested and taken into custody. The bag with money and the other items were recovered in the vehicle.
The suspected getaway car with registration plate, PSS 5406, is owned by Bentick.
During investigation the men constantly changed their story. In one instance they said that they were hired by the victim to stage the robbery, and that the money was to be divided.
They were refused bail and remanded to jail. The matter has been transferred to the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court for continuation on November 24.
