The final round of the Guyana Police Force’s annual Smellie Cup First Aid Competition,
concluded yesterday at the Tactical Services Unit Square, Police Headquarters, Eve Leary. Teams were tested in their theoretical and practical knowledge of “first aid”.
Of the 13 police units that participated in this year’s Cup, the four that made it to the finals were the ‘A’ Division, ‘C’ Division, the Tactical Services Unit and the Felix Austin Police College.
With their superior display of first aid knowledge and practical skill, the team representing the Felix Austin Police College easily claimed the “Smellie Cup” title this year and received the grand prize of $100, 000.
This registered the 15th victory for the Felix Austin Police College since the competition was initiated in the 1950s.
The people in winners’ row were Constable Toni Bentley, Constable Troy Bovell, Constable Akeem Megloire and Constable Natyou Carbon.
‘A’ Division team, who received $50, 000, placed second in the competition and the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) team, who received $25, 000 placed third.
The award for the “Best individual first aider” went to Toni Bentley of the Felix Austin Police College, for her flawless answers in the contest and superior display of first aid skill.
Judging the competition were Dr. Youdhan Narine (Brickdam Medical Centre), Dr. Devaugn
Lewis (Red Cross Society), Dr. Esan Reid (Georgetown Public Hospital) and Dr. Shailindra Rajkumar (Georgetown Public Hospital).
Contestants were required to provide answers on “the causes of unconsciousness, the treatment of a dislocation, the signs and symptoms of shock, the general treatment for fractures and the treatment of minor external bleeding”, for the theoretical part of the contest.
For the judges to determine the best practical display, each team was given an opportunity to enact a scene in which it was required to render first aid services to an injured person who suffered a broken arm, broken finger and several abrasions about his body, from a motorcycle accident.
Most teams used crowd clearing techniques and traffic control demonstrations before attending to the casualty.
According to the Commissioner of Police, Seelal Persaud, the first aid competition was implemented to enhance the first aid capability among members of the police force.
He said that the competition has displayed “consistency” over the years and intends for the next year’s contest to be a bigger success.
Persaud said that the Guyana Police Force is currently working with several non-governmental organizations and the Ministry of Health, to improve medical knowledge among its members.
He said that the police force will soon collaborate with the Ministry of Health to conduct first aid training programmes in local communities.
Added to this, he said that the force is also seeking to conduct a medical outreach in Essequibo later this year.
Persaud said that the first aid competition is “very likely to grow” and encouraged more competition and participation among members of the police force.
