A man accused of carting off with $2.4M worth in items from a man’s home in Campbellville, Georgetown, was remanded to jail when he appeared before city Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday.
Vermon Prima, 42, of Lot 119 ‘B’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a break and enter and larceny charge.
It is alleged that between November 2 and November 3, last, at Lot 33 Sheriff and Dhanraj Streets, Section ‘K’ Campbellville, Georgetown, Prima broke and entered the dwelling house of Wayne Wright and stole two television sets, one stereo set system and speakers, along with other items, which totaled $2,410,000.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Corporal Deniro Jones, the Prosecutor, claimed that the address Prima had given the police was different from the one he had given the court. He said that the accused had said that he lived at 123 ‘B’ Field Sophia.
Jones urged the court to also consider the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence and to deny bail.
The Prosecution said that there is compelling evidence against the accused. He said that Prima had confessed to the crime and had also been caught inside the house.
The accused said that he normally “moves scrap metal” and said that he noticed some iron in a yard and went in. He said as he was in the yard, a car with three Tactical Service Unit (TSU) ranks and one “blue and black police” pulled up and approached him asking “wah yuh got.”
Prima told the court that he didn’t respond, but they searched him and found nothing. He argued that his fingerprints were not on the scene and that he knew nothing of the crime.
Notwithstanding his claims, the accused was remanded. His case will be called again on November 24.
