Gunmen on motorcycles created terror in East Ruimveldt Front Road on Tuesday night, when they opened fire on a resident there in an apparent execution attempt.
Their intended victim, Oswald Bunbury, called “Black Boy”, however is maintaining that the attack was a robbery attempt.
Kaieteur News understands that the gunmen discharged several rounds at Bunbury who managed to secure himself in a house just five doors from the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost.
According to reports, Bunbury told police that he was engaged in a game of cards with other persons on the East Ruimveldt front road when the two men pulled up on motorcycles. This was around 23:00 hours.
“He said when he saw that the men had on hoods over their heads, he became suspicious since he felt that they were going to rob him,” a police source told this newspaper.
Bunbury was wearing a few pieces of jewellery at the time.
The source said that Bunbury managed to make it to the safety of a nearby house without being hit by the bullets fired from the gunmen’s 9mm pistols.
But even though the target was secured in the house, the gunmen kept firing, sending at least two bullets into the door, and causing other persons who were nearby to duck for cover.
The gunmen eventually fled empty handed.
When the shooting died down, the police were contacted and a mobile patrol eventually arrived on the scene.
Ranks recovered two spent 9mm shells and a warhead which was fired at the door of the house.
Bunbury reportedly told the police that he recently arrived from the USA and that he had no grievance with anyone.
The incident has left a terrible feeling of insecurity among residents of the area since it occurred just a stone’s throw from a police location.
