Approximately 60 surgeries are scheduled for the New Amsterdam Hospital this week after a collaborative visit between the Ministry of Health and the Caribbean Medical Mission was inked last Sunday at the Boardroom of the New Amsterdam Hospital.
This follows one week after the Sathya Sai Baba Organization team of seven doctors conducted about 23 gynecological surgeries at the medical facility.
Additionally, the team, headed by Dr. Cort and Dr. Saunders, donated a quantity of healthcare and surgical equipment, including cardiac and fetal monitors, infusion pumps, miscellaneous medical and theatre supplies as well as medications. The doctors hail from Jamaica, USA, Liberia and Guyana.
Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, was present at the launch of the medical mission on Sunday. He noted that the team has come at a “very exciting time” in Guyana’s healthcare delivery process. “
He urged the team to visit Guyana more frequently and take the mission to other areas, such as Region Five’s Mahaicony Hospital, “and the Ministry of Health will give you the fullest cooperation.”
He added that over the past years, the Government has been investing more in the social sectors. “In the past, when Guyana would have been sending five or six scholars to study, we are now sending them by the loads.” You have now an army of doctors who are the ‘play dough’ that you can help us to mould, so we have been investing and now we have to get the returns,” Ramsaran added.
In another few months, another 88 doctors will graduate, and be added to the health care system in the country. “So, practically, every region and every health facility can have the services of a doctor,” he noted.
The Minister added, too, that he is pleased at the efforts to twin medical facilities, mentioning such collaboration with the Georgetown Hospital and West Demerara Regional Hospital. This has resulted in a massive 25- doctor mission in an upcoming visit by doctors from the George Washington Medical University. He congratulated the Caribbean Medical Mission for bringing skills from the Diaspora, “and dove- tailing it with our efforts.” For this month, there will be five major operations from the Diaspora.
Dr. Ramsaran also told the team about the current rolling out of the National Mental Health Strategy scheduled to go into effect soon. The national conversation began on October 10 (World Mental Health Day 2014).
“I want to thank you for being here—for being one of those five major interventions from the Diaspora into our Health Sector….and I want to recognize the leadership of the group in hovering together this regional and international approach; the Ministry of Health cannot do it alone…we need these interventions,” he added.
Medical Superintendent of the N/A Hospital, Dr. Vishalya Sharma and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the N/A Hospital, Mr. Alan Johnson received the medical supplies and equipment during a simple ceremony. CEO of the G/T Hospital, Mr. Michael Khan and other doctors in the Berbice healthcare system were present.
