Workers attached to the Guyana Sugar Cooperation (GuySuCo) Blairmont Estate, Bath Section have once again taken strike action which is into its third day. The workers walked off the job after one of their colleagues collapsed and died on the job.
On Tuesday a sugar worker attached to Blairmont Estate Bath Section died while on duty. The worker, Pearl Love, died in the backdam after he collapsed. He was left lying on the ground for almost one hour.
A post mortem examination was conducted later that day at the Fort Wellington Hospital. The cause of death was Massive Heart Attack.
According to the workers, Pearl Love was working when he fell to the ground and shouted for help. They stated that a foreman on site did not render any assistance, but left the worker on the ground for almost one hour to suffer.
Almost two hours after the worker collapsed he was taken by his colleagues to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Workers who witnessed the fate of their colleague stated that had the foreman assisted Love, the man might have survived. The workers are also contending that better systems should be put in place for their safety.
They stated that the lorry that brought the ill worker from the backdam was not equipped to undertake the task. The dams are bad and they had to place the sick Love to lie on the floor.
The workers are also protesting what they say is a foolish system employed by GuySuCo. Workers cannot render assistance to fellow workers without management consent. They also want the foreman removed from the gang and better systems put in place to avoid a recurrence.
They are calling for a full investigation into the matter.
