Banks DIH Limited has made a monetary donation to the National Library for the “Gillian Thompson Reading Challenge” held in honour of the late Chief Librarian who died in a motor vehicle accident last year.
The Reading Challenge has been organized to promote reading among young adults and adults, an initiative started by the last Chief Librarian.
The cheque was presented by Troy Peters, Banks DIH Limited Communications Manager to Chief Librarian (ag.) Emily King, during a simple ceremony at the National Library on Church Street.
King said the late Gillian Thompson, whose 48th Birth Anniversary would have been celebrated this week, had a keen interest in promoting reading among young adults.
“She had a very keen interest and that is something most needed in our society today. It is with the efforts of the staff of the National Library and me, that we will continue to work hard to see that, that dream is realized and increase the literacy level among young people and our entire population,” the Chief Librarian (ag.) said.
King expressed gratitude to Banks DIH and stated that the Company has always been supportive of the work of the National Library.
Peters, who also made a financial contribution, said the Programme was timely and he encouraged young people to capitalize on programmes being offered by the National Library to foster the growth of literacy in Guyana.
The Challenge was held during September and October and was opened to two categories of readers – young adults (14 to 18 years old) and adults (persons above 19 years). The presentation of prizes will be made shortly following the announcement of the winners.
