In a recent meeting of the General Assembly 188 countries condemned the blockade on Cuba, prior to this meeting of the
General Assembly, nearly 160 countries and international organizations sent messages calling for an end to the blockade, according to President of the Guyana Cuba Solidarity Movement, Haleem Khan.
However, he explained that votes of the General Assembly are non-binding and the U.S. has historically ignored calls from that body to end its blockade.
The title of the document debated at the U.N. was “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”. The topic has been debated at every session of the General Assembly since the 46 session. The blockade has been routinely condemned by leaders from throughout the world.
Noting that the U.S. is increasingly isolated in its position pertaining to ending the blockade on Cuba, Khan said that a recent poll indicated a majority of U.S. residents support ending the blockade.
Khan explained that the blockade is the longest in the history of humankind and has imposed economic, financial and commercial restrictions on Cuba for 50 years and was enacted as a tool for U.S. foreign policy to oust a government that it opposed.
It has failed to do so and has only imposed harsh restrictions on goods that have a detrimental effect on the lives and health of Cubans.
Meanwhile, Khan emphasised that the United States and Cuba are at opposite poles as they deal with Ebola. One, seemingly, is stuck in paralysis and a siege mentality. The other offers a confident, collective approach to calamity.
As opposed to Cuba’s well-established ties of solidarity with African nations, the U. S. record is of helter-skelter private charities, military interventions under the aegis of the United States Africa Command, and sponsorship of global capitalism, plunderer in Africa.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State, John Kerry, broke the ice of decades of frosty relations with the communist state when he praised Cuba for its “impressive” efforts to tackle Ebola.
“Cuba, a country of just 11 million people, has sent 165 health professionals and it plans to send nearly 300 more,” he told foreign diplomats in Washington.”
US officials went on to say that they were happy to be cooperating with Havana.
