– laments efforts to keeps losses from public
Yesterday the People’s Progressive Party told the media that there is a break down in security at the Guyana Elections
Commission (GECOM). This, PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee said is of grave concern to the Party which like any other political Party is a GECOM stakeholder.
There have been significant losses of electoral material and other items from several GECOM locations.
Rohee, as he hosted the PPP weekly press conference at the Party’s Robb Street Headquarters, said that the PPP has been reliably informed that just about 25 cartons of the indelible electoral ink as well as dozens of black tanks have gone missing or cannot be unaccounted for within GECOM.
“What is even more alarming is that there seem to be efforts within GECOM to keep these breaches of security from the public and the stakeholders.”
Rohee said that covering up such breaches in security by GECOM would further shake the confidence and trust that stakeholders have in the entire elections commission.
However, when asked if the PPP has lost any confidence in the man sitting at the helm of GECOM, Dr. Steve Surujbally, Rohee responded in the negative.
Rohee called on the Chairman of GECOM to provide all political parties as well as the public with the full details of these breaches of security as well as assurances that appropriate action or actions will be taken against whoever is found to be negligent.
Rohee, who is also the Minister of Home Affairs, said that the Guyana Police Force must be called upon to investigate these breaches.
Rohee lamented that for too long, equipment and items procured from tax payer’s monies by GECOM are stolen or declared lost and no one is held accountable.
He said that the PPP recalled “the declared lost” laptop computers to date. No one was held accountable and or responsible.
“GECOM may wish to update the populace on these issues as well, said Rohee.
