– lands new rice deals with Caribbean states
The rice industry is once again, churning out an outstanding performance as Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy disclosed yesterday that not only has Guyana surpassed last year’s annual rice production figures, but it has also broken the record for the most rice exported on a monthly basis.
He said too that the Ministry of Agriculture also managed to successfully land new deals with some Caribbean territories.
Dr. Ramsammy, via a telephone interview, said that as of Tuesday last, rice exports were at 401 000 tonnes. This impressively beats last year’s total annual production figure which stood at 393 000 tonnes. It was the highest then.
The Agriculture Minister said that Guyana also has a contract of 137, 000 tonnes of rice which is to be delivered by year end. He revealed that new contracts are also being signed and that Guyana is on track when it comes to exceeding an annual export of 500,000 tonnes of rice for 2014.
Dr. Ramsammy said that the highest monthly total Guyana has ever exported is 54,000 tonnes but this month, it is gearing to export over 70 000 tonnes for up to Tuesday. This he said would represent the largest single month export in Guyana’s history. “Our export thus far is in excess of 67,000 tonnes so I know that there is a ship loading up over 6000 tonnes; we are very proud of that,” Dr. Ramsammy explained.
“As of right now, we have completed most of the harvest of the second crop…The last crop we harvested produced 335 000 tonnes and we have already exceeded 600,000 tonnes for 2014 and we still have about 13 or 15 percent left to harvest so for sure we would reach a level in excess of 600,000. I am proud that we have exceeded it already. That percent left to be harvested would give us let’s say about 30,000 to 40,000 tonnes of rice.”
Dr. Ramsammy asserted that Guyana is currently shipping to its regular regional and international customers, which include Venezuela, Jamaica, and Europe. He noted however, that all arrangements to ship Guyana’s rice to Africa this month have been halted in light of the Ebola virus situation in some parts of the continent.
The Agriculture Minister said that some of the new contacts the government was able to secure were with Guatemala, Panama, and Nicaragua. He noted as well that there is a scheduled shipment for Venezuela.
