A 29-year-old taxi driver, who spent months avoiding the clutches of the police, is now the third person to be indicted for stealing a man’s car earlier this year.
Alton Golding is the last of the alleged perpetrators to appear at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for stealing Iverly Allicock’s motor car (PPP 5786). The Toyota Axela motor car which is valued $2.7M was hijacked at John Street, Campbellville, on June 11, last.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the allegations, but Magistrate Ann McLennan remanded him to prison.
The request for Golding to be denied bail came from Police Prosecutor Corporal Deniro Jones, who opposed bail due to the prevalence, nature and gravity of the charge.
The Prosecution told the court that the defendant is a flight risk who would not return to face the charge instituted against him. He reminded the court that the theft occurred in June, but Golding had been on the run. The prosecutor added that the accused had only been apprehended on Wednesday.
Though Jones did not reveal the details of the crime yesterday, the Prosecution had disclosed how Golding and his two accomplices, Kirtland Scott, 23, of Friendship, East Coast of Demerara and Mortimer Chan, stole the car that day. The two had faced the said simple larceny charge at separate times in June before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
During Chan’s court hearing, it was stated that around 01:00 hours on the morning in question, Allicock reportedly parked his car in front of his yard and retired to bed. When the victim awoke later that morning, he realized that his car was missing and subsequently made a report to the Police.
Acting on information ranks went to Buxton on the East Coast of Demerara and managed to recover the car. Findings during the investigations into the matter led to the three men. Though they had been arrested at different times, they were all charge with simple larceny.
Following the brief court hearing yesterday, Golding was remanded to prison and the matter was adjourned to November 14 for report.
