Overseas-based Guyanese and Environmental Activist, Maureen Regan, recently launched a group that aims to be environmentally friendly and execute projects that can sustain a greener environment.
The group, “Green Urban Visionaries” (GUV), was launched at Palmyra, East Canje, by Region Six Chairman, David Armogan, and Vice Chairman, Bhupaul Jhagroo along with other officials.
Regan is the Founder and President of “Green Earth Urban Gardens Inc”. based in New York, USA. She pursued studies in Horticultural Therapy at the New York Botanical Garden in 2007. There, she learned how to rehabilitate patients by involving them in a wide range of therapeutic gardening activities.
Regan founded Green Earth Urban Gardens Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mandate is to promote social and environmental solutions through urban farming, to benefit the diverse ethnic community including special needs, underprivileged youths, and the aged populations.
“I have had several meetings with the youth group and although newly formed, they are already working a slew of projects that will benefit the area: planting nut trees along the cane field side of the public road, start a garbage collection and clean-up of the village, while teaching the villagers how to recycle, collaborate with Region 6 office to plant over 200 trees along the Bridge Road and clean up Palmyra turn from all the public dumping that is going on there,” she stated.
Although she initiated the formation of the group and will act as mentor and facilitator, the young people, she stated, are quite enthusiastic about their community, “and I feel they will work well together to show leadership on environmental issues.”
Future plans to develop the Palmyra, East Canje site would be the construction of a community centre.
Regan currently works part-time at the Queens Botanical Garden as a Green Jobs instructor, and as a volunteer instructor for two special needs classes at the Lowell School, an accredited nonprofit institution in Queens, where she imparts life skills to the students. She continues her studies in horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden, Master Composter at Queens Botanical Garden, Bee keeping at the Voelker Orth Museum in Flushing, and Chinese Language studies at the China Institute in Manhattan, NYC.
Regan is the recipient of numerous civic and community awards for her ardent dedication to sustainable farming, fostering cross-cultural relationships, and teaching entrepreneurial skills.
“My goal is to give back to my community that helped shape me to who I am today. I know that this group will be a great example for other communities as the passion is very evident when they are together,” she added.
Region Six Chairman, Mr. Armogan praised Regan for forming the group. He called on her to continue to develop their community and enhance the environment.
