An Enmore East Coast Demerara businessman is being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital, for several chops he sustained when three men tried to rob his business on Sunday night.
The man, Chandradat Purnadatt, called Sunil, was closing his business place at Logwood, which includes an internet café, when the men attacked him.
This newspaper understands that the men wounded the businessman after he claimed to recognize one of them.
According to reports, the men who were armed with cutlasses entered Purnadatt’s premises around 20:00 hours and demanded that he open the grill door which he had already secured.
They demanded the keys and cash which the businessman refused to hand over.
He then announced that he had recognized one of the men who had visited his business earlier that day. This startled the bandits who began raining chops on Purnadatt, even as he screamed for help.
As neighbours turned on their lights after being aroused by the businessman’s screams, the bandits made good their escape empty handed.
Purnadatt was rushed to the hospital where he was immediately admitted.
Sunday’s attack has led to renewed calls from members of the community for the restoration of a properly functioning community policing group.
They lamented that their village which once boasted one of the best community policing groups has been taken over by gangs of dope peddlers.
They are appealing to the Minister of Home Affairs and to the Commissioner of Police to intervene to smash these dope gangs to prevent Enmore from coming under siege very soon.
