Did you know that the first time Guyana contested the CONCACAF Tournament was September, 1971 playing against Suriname. Guyana lost the home and away series 4 – 1 and 3 – 2. Suriname won the series opener by four goals to one backed by a boisterous and capacity packed house, the Dutchmen went ahead in the 22nd minute through Lebeda. Guyana equalized in the 32nd minute courtesy of Vibert Cardo Williams. Suriname scored again in the 62nd, 64th and 87th minute. Their goal scorers were Doesburg, Schaal and Bundel.

In the return fixture played at GCC Bourda, the Dutchmen won a hard fought battle 3 – 2, eliminating the host.
Suriname goal scorers were Armand Doesburg, Skipper Eritz Puperhart and Erwin Schaal. Guyana marksmen were Robert ‘Bobby’ Fernandes who scored a classic and 17 years old school boy Clyde Wholly Forde.
