A 34-year-old taxi driver was granted $120,000 bail after facing fraud charges at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Suresh Singh of Bartica, Cuyuni-Mazaruni was taken before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
It is alleged that on October 7, last, at Third Avenue, Bartica, he was entrusted with $1M by Pamela Hussain to purchase fuel and groceries, but he fraudulently converted the money to his own use and benefit.
The unrepresented defendant pleaded not guilty and requested bail in a “small” amount. Singh said that he would usually work for Hussain as a taxi driver but “it’s just that an accident happened.”
He stated that other than traffic matters, this was his first time in Court to answer such a charge.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Michael Grant did not oppose bail, thus this was granted to the taxi driver under the condition that he reports to the Bartica Police Station every Friday at 18:00 hours.
The case was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court and will be called on October 16.
