A police witness testifying in the murder trial of Cyon Collier, called “Picture Boy” told the court yesterday that an AK 47 and other weaponry were found at the same house in which the accused was arrested.
Collier is facing a second trial in the High Court before Justice Dawn Gregory and a mixed jury. The last trial ended in a deadlock after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict.
Collier was indicted for the murder of businessman, Chandrapaul Persaud, called “Kero man.” The killing reportedly took place during a robbery on September 2006.
Persaud was purportedly shot outside his Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara residence by one of three gunmen during the robbery. The gunmen entered his premises and robbed his family of cash and jewellery before driving off with his car.
The accused was later identified as one of the three perpetrators in the crime.
Yesterday, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Michael Kingston, told the court that acting on information received, he and a group of other law enforcement officers went to the house located at Lot 33 Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara, where they cautioned and arrested the accused.
The officer said he told the court that he put the allegation to the accused.
“I told him that it was alleged on Saturday September 13, 2010 he, in the company of others, shot and robbed the businessman at his home in Non Pareil. Kingston said. To this the police witness said that the accused replied, “Officer me ain’t been dey.”
The policeman recounted that the accused took them to a bedroom of the one-storey house where a number of firearms, including an AK -47 assault rifle, were found.
The policeman said that the AK 47 and 13 rounds of matching ammunition in a magazine were found under the bed; a .25 Astra pistol with matching rounds and a 12 gauge shotgun and cartridge were also found in the bedroom.
He said that the weapons were sealed, packaged and later taken to the Cove and John Police station and later tendered as evidence during the various court proceedings at the Magistrates’ and Supreme Court.
Under Cross examination by Defence Counsel, Lyndon Amsterdam, Kingston said that he only received a phone call about the murder but he never took any statements from an eyewitness in the matter.
Earlier this week, another Police witness, Inspector Chabinauth Singh, had told the court that he received a call about a suspected murder, which occurred at Non Pariel. He said that when he arrived at the scene of the crime he saw the body of a man lying in a yard.
Chabinauth said that he transported the man to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
