DEAR EDITOR,
I am both saddened and disgusted at the recent disclosure of school-children being video-taped while engaging in sexual acts. And from what I have been hearing, this is not an isolated incident, which makes it even more troubling.
My heart goes out to those children, especially the girls and their parents, whose lives could be forever negatively impacted. This morning I gave some thought to what I can contribute to the discourse. For whatever it is worth, I believe what is needed at this stage is a comprehensive sex education program for the youth of Guyana – a program that speaks primarily to sexual conduct and its responsibilities.
No doubt, many will see this suggestion as an encouragement for our youth to have sex rather than an approach to protect them from exploitation, unwanted pregnancies and disease, which could lead to death.
Let’s face it. Young people will have sex whether we like it or not, and do remember they do not need the permission of parents nor anyone in authority for that matter. Young people have sex because they have sexual feelings, not because they are bad. So let’s protect them and teach them about morals and values, and of course, consequences.
