A female fraudster who told investigators that she was born in Venezuela and took over $57, 000 worth of items from a female vendor, but disappeared after, has been arrested and charged. This was after a warrant was issued for her arrest.
The woman Jenelle Wong, 27, who gave her address as Naresh Street, Canefield, East Canje, Berbice, was charged with obtaining credit by fraud.
According to Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter the defendant between December 2, and February 21, at the New Amsterdam Market, obtained credit of one bottle cream, sandals, underwear, T shirt, finger rings, shoulder bags and other articles to the total value of $57,000 property of Giselle Simpson a stall holder of New Amsterdam market.
The woman appeared on Friday before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Reliance Magistrate’s court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Playter told the court that the accused knew the woman she defrauded. He stated that the accused would usually take items from the virtual complainant on a credit basis and would pay later.
Between the dates mentioned above, the accused proceeded to credit the items and refused to pay. When contacted she repeatedly forked up various excuses about her inability to pay the debt and subsequently disappeared.
The matter was reported to the police and an investigation was launched in the matter and the accused was charged, but failed to attend court. The matter was called more than six times, but Wong failed to attend court. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued for her arrest.
Subsequently the police were informed of Wong’s location and she was arrested and detained. In court she pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate initially refused bail, citing the woman for disrespecting the court given the number of times the matter was called and she never attended court.
However appearing as a friend of the court Attorney at Law Charrandass Persaud in a plea of mitigation, asked the court to grant bail to Wong. He stated that it might have been a genuine case that she might have been unaware of the circumstances.
After some persuasions the Magistrate decided to grant bail in the sum of $175,000. Wong was also ordered to lodge her passport.
She will have to return to court on October 27 for a continuation of her matter.
