Defending Champions Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) and Diplomat registered victories in their opening game of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/Malta Supreme U-13 tournament yesterday.
Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) defeated Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) by 30 runs at the GNIC ground.
GYO batted first after winning the toss and rattled up 285-5 from 25 overs before restricting GCC for 255-7.
Keshawn Thomas top scored for GYO with 35 while Brandon Mathews and Elnathan Suknandan made 14 and 10 respectively.
GYO lost four batsmen via the run out route while Ricardo Phillips took the other wicket to fall.
In response GCC threatened but fell short as Zackery Jodah top scored with 11; off spinner Meshack Sofheigh captured three wickets.
At Malteenoes SC, Diplomat overcame the home team by three runs. Diplomat batted first and posted 233 off their allotted 25 overs. Jonathan St. Hill led with 25, Treyjohn Prince and Meshack Sofeigh contributed 11 and 10 respectively. Shaquille Charles and Wayne Bollers Jnr claimed four wickets each. MSC replied with 230-7 in 25 overs.
The competition continues today with MSC hosting GYO from 9:30 hrs while from 13:30 hrs DCC will face Diplomats. At YMCA, Transport Sports Club will come up against GCC from 9:30hrs while Everest Cricket Club and Bel Air Rubis will do battle from 13:30 hrs.
According to the competition regulations, the pitch shall be 21 yards in length and the ball shall be 4¾ ozs. Players must be born on or after 1st June 2001. Matches will consist of one innings per side with each innings being of 25 overs duration. The batting side shall be divided into five pairs and each pair shall bat for five overs. Batsmen shall have unlimited “lives” but each dismissal shall result in 10 runs being deducted from the team’s total.
Batsmen shall change ends after each dismissal except on the last ball of the over. Each player on the fielding side must bowl at least 2 overs, with the exception of the wicket-keeper. Each team shall commence its innings with a score of two hundred runs.
The winning team shall be the side scoring the higher number of runs after deduction for dismissals has been made. If the event of a tie the players on each side shall bowl one delivery to the stumps and the team scoring the most hits shall be the winner.
