Fresh from a first place finish in a competitive race, staged in collaboration with Education month activities September 28 last, President College student, Shemon Gittens, will attempt to replicate the feat when the Cavalier’s Sports and Tour Club stage a similar event, this time in observance of Agriculture Month/World Food Day on Sunday October 12.
Walkers will convene at the Guyana School of Agriculture, Mon Repos ECD at 06:00hrs for the official start of the race half an hour later. They will then proceed to the road head before returning to the starting point. They will be grouped in several categories including male and female seniors as well as their junior counterparts. The veterans and the differently able also contest for honours in separate categories. The first three finishers in each category will receive medals and trophies donated by corporate entities and individuals.
Meanwhile, the 10K event, staged in collaboration with Education Month, was won by Gittens with Enoch Allicock and Dyrel Sancho finishing in the second and third places respectively. Gredelle Benjamin ended this category in the fourth place, while Jennel Girdhari walked away with the top prize in the female category just ahead of Dashana Reid, Jennifer Park and Anasa Williams respectively.
The podium prizes were donated by Ansa McAl, Hand in Hand Insurance and Public Service Minister, Jennifer Westford. CSTC Coordinator, Jennifer Major, assisted in the distribution of those prizes and while congratulating the winners urged them to continue training in anticipation of possible selection on a national squad to participate in the 2016 Brazil Olympics. Ms Major further relayed gratitude to the many sponsors that have kept the sport alive but singled out Minister Westford who has rendered support in more than 50 previous events including two junior race walk camps.
