DEAR EDITOR,
Senior Superintendent Whitney Bacchus, Public Relations and Press Officer has given the-wrong impression about me in a letter under the caption “An attempt to mislead the public” in last Thursday’s edition on page 24.
No other person besides me from Suddie, Essequibo Coast writes letters in the newspapers and it could only be me to whom reference was made concerning a domestic violence case between a husband and wife in my district.
In the letter it was stated that I had enquired from the police about the matter and the facts were provided when, ipso facto, nothing of the kind was ever done by me, with such a statement being an absolute fabrication.
It was only from the publication that I learnt for the very first time of the couple’s problem and whatever transpired thereafter leading to court action and the case being dismissed.
The police opinion as expressed by the officer in the letter of me being the person attempting to mislead the public on the matter is just speculative and far from being correct.
There is a cardinal principle that no amount of suspicion can amount to legal liability, with the imputation of such an opinion just being useless.
Out of curiosity, I visited the couple’s Vilvoorden home on Monday and both of them expressed their disgust for the police deliberately telling them late, on the same day of the case, to attend the Suddie court. It was not possible then for them to reach on time.
The victim stated openly that she would have liked to give the evidence against her husband, against whom she made several reports for abusing and beating her with no indication to change his bad ways.
