Mark Bradford was charged with fraudulent conversion on Monday last, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that between November 1 and December 24, 2013, Bradford was entrusted with $525,060 by Elton Cordis to pay for a venue, music and police security for a party, but he used the money for his own benefit.
Bradford, 45, of M&TC Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, Berbice, pleaded not guilty. When asked what he does for a living, the defendant, a former reporter for the Guyana Chronicle, told the court that he is currently a ‘freelance sports journalist’.
He was granted bail originally at $100,000, but that was subsequently reduced when he stated that he “only got $50,000”.
Prosecutor Michael Grant did not oppose bail and the matter was adjourned until October 31.
