California Strike of the Mohammed “Nankoo” Shariff racing stable, ridden by top jockey Colin Roes, created a major upset as it ran a marvelous finish to defeat Guyana’s top horse Score’s Even when the Alness Turf Club successfully held their grand one day horserace meet at The Club’s entity at Alness Corentyne, Berbice.
As the feature ‘A’ and lower 1600M event got on the way the speedy Church House went out early. It was soon caught by stable mate Score’s Even as they controlled the first half of the race.
In the meantime, Ross was bidding its time aboard California Strike and as the animals hit the far turn California Strike changed gears, coming out with a blast of speed to streak past the front runners, galloping for the finish line to take the $1M and Richmond trophy first prize. Score’s Even had to settle for second with Church House third and Bridal Stone Corner fourth.
Other winners on the day were Shooting Star of the Shariff Stable in G3 and Lower event, Party Time in the ‘I’ and Lower event, Speed Vision in the K and lower event and Porridge in the L and Lower event.
The champion Jockey was Colin Ross. The Sheriff stable raced away with the champion stable accolade. Six of the eight planned races were held. Full details tomorrow.
