In observance of World Pharmacists Day, Guyana Pharmacists’ Association (GPA) hosted a week of activities to promote the role of the pharmacist in improving health sector in the Guyana.
World Pharmacists Day is observed on September 25 annually. It was designated as such by the International Pharmaceutical Federation Council (FIP) several years ago at a congress in Istanbul, Turkey.
To mark the observance, FIP is encouraging the world’s pharmacists to organize activities that promote and advocate for the important role of the pharmacists in improving health in every corner of the world.
This past week, members of GPA joined Ministry of Health in a Mental Health Walk, Let’s Gaff on NCN Radio, Pharmacists on Call on Voice of Guyana Radio /Television to participate in discussion on the topic. The GPA also distributed small tokens of appreciation to Pharmacists for their commitment to their field of work
The theme for this year’s observance is “Access to Pharmacists is Access to Health.” The GPA notes that indeed the pharmacist is the most accessible member of the health team.
It was also recognized that access to medicines does not automatically result in improved health. For optimal health outcomes to be achieved, access to medicines must be accompanied with pharmaceutical expertise and this is where the pharmacist is invaluable.
A study done in 2010 estimated that 13 per cent of the visits made to a community pharmacy are favourable results in terms of the advice given by pharmacists, thus, highlighting them as the most accessible and trusted healthcare professionals in many countries throughout the world.
The GPA is therefore calling on all pharmacists to celebrate the profession and to use World Pharmacists Day to promote the valuable role the dispensers play in bringing about improvement to the health sector. The Association also calls on all employers of pharmacists to honour, in some appreciative manner, the invaluable role played by members of this noble profession.
