Some four persons traveling onboard a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) aircraft walked away without injury yesterday, when the army carrier crashed on landing at Camp Jaguar, an interior airstrip. The occupants of the GDF Cessna 206 were heading to an army base located in the New River location when the carrier was alleged to have run off the airstrip.
A press release from the army said that no injuries were sustained when the single-engine carrier crashed upon landing at Camp Jaguar at 13:50 hours. The military agency said, “A Board of Inquiry (BOI) into the incident has been mandated, and the BOI team is travelling to the location today.’
Kaieteur News understands, however, that the army pilot might have encountered difficulty when landing at the military base which is located south-east of the country, in the Amuku-Acarai highlands.
Information is that the crashed Cessna was found at Bartica some years ago and was later acquired by the army.
The plane left the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) at Timehri and was landing at Camp Jaguar when it ran off the edge of the runway.
Unconfirmed reports are that the pilot had recently received approval to fly into the military location unsupervised.
The New River terrain is rugged − a maze of steep-sided slopes, narrow valleys and numerous hills and ridges with heights up to 300m.
Kaieteur News understands that the aircraft would have suffered moderate damage.
The New River location which forms the watershed boundary between Guyana and Brazil is about
6000 square miles and also borders the Dutch speaking nation of Suriname with whom Guyana has had disputes over the said location since the early 1930s.
Recently, when mining operations were being conducted by a Brazilian mining company, additional pressure was brought locally about operations in the sensitive area, while the nation’s Dutch neighbours had also expressed contempt.
Military presence was said to have been beefed up in the location.
The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said that it is aware of the latest incident and noted that the New River area is generally regarded as a military zone.
On Sunday a tri-engine aircraft also encountered a difficult landing at Kaieteur Falls. None of the 16 passengers traveling onboard the Trislander was injured, but as a result of the damage to the plane, it was unable to make the return flight to the city.
