…..$300,000 in jewelry stolen
Police on West Berbice have a man in custody assisting with investigations, after thieves broke into and desecrated
the D’Edward Mandir on West Bank Berbice, during the wee hours of Monday morning. The thief, discovered around 07:15 hrs by a senior member of the mandir, had apparently locked himself in the bathroom and told police that he did not know how he ended up there.
Still unaccounted for are several pieces of costume jewelry and decorations that adorned the murtis and interior of the brand-new structure. President Donald Ramotar had opened the refurbished mandir in July. The items stolen were all purchased directly from India.
Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, a member of the mandir, Adrian Hansraj, said that someone from the mandir usually turns up very early to open the place and such like.
“Normally, every morning around 06:30 hours a boy opens the mandir, [Monday morning] Brandon discovered all the clothing for the murtis were removed and scattered on the ground, so he called one of the senior members of the mandir, Hardat ‘Naresh’ Edwards, who subsequently called police around 07:15 hours.”
Upon checking, Brandon discovered all of the costume jewelry from the murtis was missing. Hansraj further related that the mandir is equipped with three washroom lavatories and a bathroom. Edwards, while making checks around the compound, observed that all of the washrooms were opened; however, the bathroom had been locked from the inside. This aroused his suspicion.
When the police arrived they knocked on the door and found a young man in his twenties, apparently sleeping.
“When the police came he opened the door,” Hansraj added. “He is claiming he doesn’t know how he reached (in the bathroom) and then he later said, that someone attempted to beat him up and he jumped the fence of the mandir and hid,” he stated.
The man was taken to the Blairmont Police Station where he was questioned. The members of the mandir believed that the intruder, popularly called ‘Ronald’ and ‘Bun Mouth’, had an accomplice. “This guy was found in somebody’s house a few months ago— hiding under the people’s bed—Like he does ‘smoke’,” he added.
“There had to be an accomplice, because none of the decorations and costume jewelry ain’t recovered,” Hansraj told this newspaper yesterday.
He underscored the high cost attached to the stolen items. “These things were really expensive; we had an existing structure and rebuilt the entire structure which was opened on July 21. We brought in brand new costume jewelry and different decorative ornaments. We bought directly from India,” he added.
The suspect remains in police custody.
