University of Guyana and Royal Youth Movements’ representative, Elton Bollers unsettled the apple cart yesterday when he became double senior sprint champion in the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Senior Championships at Eve Leary.
Bollers sprinted his way to the 100m win in 10.90 seconds at the senior meet ahead of his rival from Police, Tevin Garraway (11.00) and Terry Easton (11.10) respectively. The finals-by-time method means that all the preliminaries were completed and the fastest times from the Heats go into order to select the placings in a final.
Bollers returned in the 200m (final-by-time) to win with 22.00 seconds ahead of Garraway, who clocked 22.10 and Linton Mentis (22.30). Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC) Garraway was the clear favourite to win both events, given that several senior athletes and clubs did not participate in the competition.
Running Braves Athletics Club, Natrena Hooper ran 13.10 to win the 100m ahead of club mates, Shoquane Daniels and Ruth Sanmoogan, who had 13.40 and 13.90 respectively. Hooper returned to win the 200m in 25.70 with Shomane Daniels (26.90) and Shoquane Daniels (27.50), who are twins, second and third in that order.
Natrena’s sister, Natricia then made it a family affair when she won the 400m in 58.50 with the phenom, club-mate, Jevina Sampson (59.00) second and Shomane third in 1:01.70 for another Running Braves clean sweep. Natrena and Natricia Hooper also topped the Women Triple Jump being the only two athletes in the event.
The Police Progressive Youth Club and Guyana Defence Force did not participate in the event at full strength owed to their focus on Joint Services. Apart from them, lots of other seasoned clubs and athletes were noticeably missing from the event.
Police’s Kareem Purch and Marvin Tinnis swept the 400m race in 52.50 and 53.10 seconds in that order. Ruralites’ Seon Budham (55.10) was third. Cleveland Thomas won the male 1500m and 5000m races ahead Winston Missigher in both events.
Andrea Foster won the 1500m female race in 5:06.15 with Mariah McKenzie second in 5:37.35. Another Running Brave athlete, Rondel Austin won the 800m race in 2:08.56 with Seon Burry (2:14.39) second. Two athletes competed in both races.
Garraway sprang his way to 6.98m to win the male long jump event ahead of Maurice Gibson, who leaped 6.29m and Damon Williams (6.19m). Williams reversed the order in the triple jump with a 12.98m jump with Gibson (12.70m) second and Karon Hercules (12.01m) third.
