It didn’t matter that the Vigilance Police Station was just a few doors away; some brazen bandits staged a daring mid morning attack on an East Coast Demerara businessman yesterday, carting off an undisclosed amount of cash, gold jewellery and his licenced firearm.
The attack which appeared to be well organized, was so swift that by the time the police were alerted, the bandits had already disappeared in their grey Toyota Premio motorcar.
It was the second time that the businessman Vinood Hitlall, who operates the Vinood Lumber Yard and Pawn Shop at Lot 10 Vigilance Public Road, was the target of bandits within the past two years.
His wife, Sahodra told Kaieteur News that her husband was sitting in his car outside the premises when the bandits struck around 09:15 hours.
She explained that her husband had left home earlier to conduct business with some of his associates and had returned home for a beverage when the attack occurred.
According to the woman, her husband’s driver left him in the car and came into the yard to collect the beverages from the shop the couple also operates at their home.
Sahodra Hitlall related that she was in her yard when she saw two men approach her husband in the car and one of them held him at gunpoint.
One of the men took away a bag containing jewellery and his firearm.
“Is jewels wha he had fuh people dem carry away. Me ain’t know ah how much million in jewels. Dat is de business he does do. Every Sunday he does carry out jewel fuh people,” Mrs. Hitlall said.
She said that one of the bandits saw her and the driver in the yard and approached them with his gun drawn.
“Dem run in pon me too but dem couldn’t get in because de two gate de lock. Me run and me run out at de back gate and me run over by de neighbour and holler fuh tief, leh dem call de police,” the woman added.
Their driver, Omesh Hitlall, recalled that he had just emerged from the car outside the premises to collect the beverages when he saw two men come out from another car which appeared to have been trailing them.
“One attack me uncle and one ah dem run in hey to me…he say ‘don’t move or ah gon shoot…and pass everything’. I had on a chain and he jerk off de chain. Me phone and some money been in me pocket, he tek dat too,” the driver stated.
He said the bandit who had attacked him left the yard and joined his accomplice and they both reentered the waiting car which sped away immediately.
When the dust had settled, he, along with his employer, drove the short distance to the Vigilance Police Station where they reported the matter.
“Same time de police coming out and he (Bossman) jump in de police vehicle and go after dem. Dey drive up to Melanie but dem men done gone,” the driver explained.
Sahodra Hitalll is convinced that the bandits were monitoring her husband’s movements over a period of time since the attack was carried out with trained precision.
She also found it hard to understand how the bandits could have been so brazen to carry out the day time attack, knowing that the Vigilance Police Station was just a stone’s throw away.
“You just not safe in dis place no matter where you live,” she said.
