In her opening remarks, GSSF President Ms. Vidushi Persaud paid tribute to the members who came out to take part in the event and praised the outstanding effort that was put in by the Match Committee to ensure that everything was organised for the inaugural event.
She noted that the success of the events of sporting organisations depends primarily on commitment and co-operation: “There is no substitute for good relations and teamwork,” She noted.
GSSF Vice President Mr. Michael Blake in brief remarks noted that strict safety rules will be observed and wished all the shooters best of luck and to put firearm safety first while having fun.
Steel Challenge is considered to be one of the fastest shooting competitions in the world. The competition on Saturday consisted of two stages where competitors were required to shoot five different steel targets set out at various angles and distances, one of which is designated as a “stop plate.”
Registering a hit on the plate stops the time. The total time it takes to hit all five plates is used for the score. Misses and penalties add 3 seconds to the time for each. Competitors are scored using an electronic timing device which records the time that every shot is fired, the shooter with lowest time wins.
Shooting was done from a stationary position for the two stages. The shooter would assume his/her position in the shooting box, upon the beep of the timer, draw their firearm and shoot at the targets, timer stops when the shooter hits what is designated to be the stop plate.
The competitor’s best four scores out of five strings of fire on each stage will then be added together for a collective score. The lowest total time/score for all stages wins the overall match.
Thanks were extended by the president to Managing Director of Doc.com, Mr. Pravesh
Harry, Messrs. Ken and Kevin Jaikaran of Ken’s Mufflers, the Chief of Staff of the GDF, Brigadier Mark Phillips, the National Sports Commission, Mr. Neil Kumar, Director of Sport and the Ministry of Sport for their support.
The Range Officers and match officials were also complimented for their hard work in ensuring the staging of a smooth and efficient Match. The SCSA Match Committee (Roul Bhudu, Pravesh Harry, Michael Blake) was also complimented as was the hard-working and tireless Ryan McKinnon, who President Persaud noted, was a pillar of strength and one of the main reasons they were all about to embark on an exciting journey with GSSF to take the sport of shooting in Guyana to a whole new level.
