Prime Minister Samuel Hinds paid a courtesy call on the parents of Meena Devi Singh, 18, who was
struck down last Sunday evening along the Letter Kenny Public Road on the Corentyne. The official was accompanied by Region Six Chairman, David Armogan; and Members of Parliament, Faizal M. Jaffarally and Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo.
Singh, called ‘Asha’ and ‘Ashmanie’ of Lot 222 Letter Kenny, had just got off a minibus when she was struck down by a blue Toyota, PMM3080. Singh, the only girl for her parents, was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, where she succumbed.
The driver, 20-year-old Andrew Johnson, was released on $600,000 bail on Wednesday during his first appearance at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.
Hinds sat and chatted with the parents. He told them that accidents do happen, “but everyone needs to ensure that accidents are few…”
Guyana is having too high an accident rate on the roads, “and it is a concern of the government which is trying to prevent things like speeding, often drinking and driving. Sometimes being on the cell phone contributes and sometimes pedestrians, too, are not as careful as they ought to be.”
The dead girl’s parents told the Prime Minister that their daughter had plans to become a nurse and had commenced studies at the School of Nursing.
Singh’s cremation will take place today.
