The face of North Central Rupununi, Region Nine, is rapidly changing. Standing at the forefront
is the village of Yupakari.
Located between the Kanuku and Pakaraima mountain ranges, the community prides itself on keeping with the times. Recently it received a new Industrial Arts Centre that will focus on carpentry and joinery skills.
The centre was recently handed over by the New Zealand High Commission/ Head of Mission Fund.
The renovated building was commissioned in June. Boasting new additional wood storage facility, it also has a generator house stocked with imported electrical power tools from the USA, and accessories that will allow the centre to operate efficiently and competitively with other professional carpentry enterprises.
This is the second center by the fund. There is a similar facility in Lethem, a community also in Region Nine. This one was handed over since 2005.
The ‘Industrial Arts’ center in Yupakari has now become a popular and successful operating unit, making and providing furniture for the local community and village’s nature lodge.
Yupakari is a diamond in the rough, with an approximate population of 500, mainly Macushi Amerindians. The village is slowly changing traditional practices and evolving into a modern and innovative community.
Toshao Rudolph Roberts described Yupakari as a progressive community that is always looking for development opportunities that would benefit its members. “The goal of the project is to try and stop our young people leaving our community,” he said.
“The new Centre will provide high quality vocational training and income generation opportunities, but also allow them to participate, and contribute to the development of their own community.”
Michael Martin, the Project Coordinator explained that the community successfully coordinated this project between several other ongoing initiatives and should feel proud of the achievement.
Two senior project team members, Cecil Mandook and Combrencent Ernest, were involved
in every aspect; from the project design, construction right down to the equipment selection. They are both excited by the challenge. “This center allows us to create our own opportunities with the skills we already hold. We could win a contract for supplying school furniture for our community and the other ones near us. We can prove that we are better than other professional businesses,” said Combrencent.
Deputy Toshao, Brian Duncan, stated: “We hope that this initiative will be an example for other community developments in the future. Local skill paired with the correct level of technical support is essential for communities to complete and manage these programs in a sustainable way.”
