At age 22, Colwyn Abrams is convinced that the world is his stage, and as Linden’s representative in the Mr. Guyana International competition in November, he sees the opportunity as a huge stepping stone towards the realization
of some of his dreams. Colwyn, who has roots in Coomacka, a small mining village on the outskirts of Linden, credits his unique good looks to
His Amerindian and African blend.
“When I was younger my friends used to call me Oreo, but I’m really proud of
my heritage and feel blessed to be a Guyanese. This month being Amerindian Heritage month, I’m must say that I’m proud that my ancestors were the first people to come here.
I’m also proud of our unique culture. All in all I feel really blessed because I embrace two cultures-African and Amerindian”.
Colwyn breathes creativity, expressing himself in dance, song and garment designing. As regards his designs, he confides, “In my designs, I go for a look that’s not too neat- I mean the finish and everything is neat, but I just incorporate something rugged, or uniquely Colwyn, to the whole ensemble.
“For instance, my suit jackets fall or drape differently, and there is just that little bit of ruggedness there. With dressing it’s the same, I never come across as too
neat, at least not fastidiously so.”
Colwyn’s designs have featured in several pageants and fashion shows in Linden, and he has become extremely popular at serenading the young ladies at these events.
“People always seek me out to do these things, I don’t know what it is whether it is my personality or my voice, but I’m always in demand whenever there are such activities.
And I must say I do enjoy doing it, and also derive great pleasure from seeing the looks of surprise and pleasure on the faces of the young ladies”.
Confident
Our contestant, who says that he feeds off the energy of other Linden winners, such as Malika Boyd, Timeka Marshall and Ruqayyah Boyer, is confident that even if he does not walk away with the title, he is definitely going to be among the
top five.
As regards the reason behind his decision to participate in the competition, he declared, “ I see this as a great opportunity to express my creativity- I’m a designer and fashion enthusiast- I do designs for a lot of pageants and
so on. I’m also a dancer and singer- I love performing arts on the whole, so the competition will give me the opportunity to showcase my talents and creativity.”
This young man is definitely no stranger to the stage, having performed with the Lichas Dance Company on numerous occasions and has also participated twice in the GT&T Jingle and song competitions. He is presently employed as a marketing representative in Linden, and also operates as a freelance broadcaster with Linden’s 104.3 power fm radio.
