Paul Ramsammy, who was diagnosed with scoliosis last year, is now seeking financial assistance from members
of the public to facilitate a much needed surgical intervention.
If this surgery is not done as soon as possible, the 14-year-old Grove, East Bank Demerara teenager will not be able to live a normal life.
Ramsammy was diagnosed with this disorder last year by a doctor at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The GPHC does not offer the surgery Ramsammy needs. He was advised to visit a hospital in Mumbai, India where the operation can be done at a cost of $3M. The Government of Guyana is assisting the family with $1M.
According to the teenager’s mother, Alison Bryce, some time last year her son went home after school when she noticed his back “looking strange.”
“I asked him if anyone hit him or if he fall down and he said no, then I took him to the hospital and the doctor say that it was scoliosis. He cannot breathe properly, his heart and lungs squeeze in so he has to do this surgery as soon as possible,” Bryce said.
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. While scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most scoliosis is unknown.
Most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some children develop spine deformities that continue to get more severe as they grow. Severe scoliosis can be disabling.
An especially severe spinal curve can reduce the amount of space within the chest, making it difficult for the lungs to function properly.
Children who have mild scoliosis are monitored closely, usually with X-rays, to see if the curve is getting worse. In many cases, no treatment is necessary.
Some children will need to wear a brace to stop the curve from worsening. Others may need surgery to keep the scoliosis from worsening and to straighten severe cases of scoliosis.
Anyone willing to assist the family can contact 216-0711 or 602-6670. The family has an account with Republic Bank Limited.
The account number is 795055-3.
