Berbice defeated Demerara by 10 runs to capture the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)
senior Inter County 50-over title yesterday.
Berbice posted 163 all out in 25.4 overs after they were inserted by Demerara at Albion in a match which was reduced to 26 overs due to overnight rain, forcing the ground authorities to shorten the boundary somewhat on the Western side of the ground. The visitors were restricted for 153-9 off their allocation of overs in reply.
Berbice were put on the back foot early when pacer Paul Wintz had Kandasammy Surujnarine (00) caught in the slips in the first over without a run on the board before Anthony Bramble and Devon Clements added 35 for the second wicket, carefully rotating the strike on a heavy outfield.
Clements cut Christopher Barnwell to the point boundary but was dropped the very next delivery by wicketkeeper Shemroy Barrington diving to his right before left arm spinner Raj Nanan trapped Bramble lbw for 12. Bramble who punched Barnwell through point for four added a further 34 with skipper Deonarine before he was well caught by Trevon Griffith running in at long-on for 30 in the 14th over. Deonarine settled in nicely picking up ones and twos before he deposited Nanan for a straight six. He continued to look positive, but soon lost Rajiv Ivan who attempted a wild swipe at Steven Jacobs and was caught by Nanan at short third man for 10 with the score at 94.
Deonarine and fellow Albion club mate Jonathan Foo (12) came together and featured in a fourth wicket stand of 26.
Deonarine’s intention was clear, he drove Wintz powerfully to long-on and cut him majestically thought point for consecutive boundaries. However Wintz could have had him caught, but Bacchus’ late reaction caused the ball to drop just short on the cover boundary. Deonarine lofted Bacchus over his head and Trevon Griffith failed to hold on to a difficult chance, however the left hander’s pull shot found Steven Jacobs at mid –wicket the very next delivery. He departed for 44 (3×4,1×6) off 49 balls. Foo dispatched Barnwell through mid- wicket for a boundary, but was out obstructing the field in the most absurd fashion. His drive was fielded by Barnwell in his follow through who attempted to throw down the stumps, but Foo hit the ball on the off side as if it was a legal delivery much to the disappointment of the fair size crowd.
Barnwell struck in the next over with the wicket of Seon Hetmyer (02) before Bacchus uprooted the stumps of Veerasammy Permaul (12). Wintz had Romario Shepherd DeJonge (05) caught and disturbed the stumps of Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai (12) to wrap up the innings. Wintz was the pick of the bowlers with 3-40, Bacchus claimed 2-24, Jacobs 2-31, there was a wicket each for and Barnwell and Nanan.
Trevon Griffith and Andrew Lyght Jnr added 37 for the opening stand to set the visitors on course. Lyght took boundaries off DeJonge before he was bowled by the pacer for 17. Griffith then featured in a second wicket stand of 48 with Bacchus to further frustrate the host. Griffith cut DeJonge for a boundary and caressed Clements for another through point, while Bacchus got off the mark with a four off Clements. Bacchus smashed Permaul for a six over long-on but was caught at mid-wicket off Deonarine for 25 (2×4,1×6) before Barnwell lost his stumps to Permaul attempting a wild swipe; the host fought back. Permaul then bowled Griffith for 44 (2×4) as Demerara slipped to 101-4. He faced 47 balls.
Rajendra Chandrika smashed Motie-Kanhai over covers for four before he was lbw to a straight ball from Permaul for 11. Steady bowling by the host kept Demerara at bay as they continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Shemroy Barrington (01) was lbw to Motie- Kanhai, while Permaul accounted for Zaheer Mohamed (13) leaving the score at 130-7. Chanderpaul Hemraj (10) drove Permaul through covers for a boundary before he was bowled by Keon Joseph attempting to go over the top. Steven Jacobs (01) then edged Joseph to wicketkeeper Bramble at 136-9. The efforts of Nanan (14*) and Wintz (04*) were not enough to take the visitors home. Permaul snared 3-32, Deonarine 2-23, Joseph 2-28; while DeJonge and Kanhai had one each. Deonarine was named man of the match, best bowler (10 wickets) and most valuable player of the tournament; Barrington was given the best wicketkeeper prize, Griffith the most outstanding fielder and Essequibo’s Kevon Boodie (259) the best batsman.
