Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, has called on members of the Guyana Police Force, (GPF) to intensify efforts to combat the increasing level of criminal activities.
He was at the time addressing the closing ceremony of the Junior Officers’ Course at the Guyana Police Force’s Training Centre, Eve Leary, on Tuesday.
Twenty-six law enforcement officers had successfully undergone several weeks of training which seeks to address the vital needs of middle managers in the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and its sister organisations.
In addition to the junior police officers who completed the course, participants included members of the Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Prison Service, Guyana Fire Service and the City Constabulary.
While the Minister commended the junior law enforcement officers for their successful completion of the course, he noted, that there is still need for members of the force to engage in widespread training.
“Policing around the world and in Guyana has become more challenging. It is therefore necessary that the Guyana Police Force engages in extensive training of its ranks to make them more efficient and effective in their functions,” Rohee said yesterday.
He said that the Home Affairs Ministry has offered a number of programmes and strategies to improve the standard of service offered by the law enforcement agency.
Rohee said that there are still slippages in the quality of performance by members of the organisation.
He said that the number of murders, robberies and gun related crimes are matters of grave concern to the ministry.
“The number of murders is too high and the solution rate too low; robberies continue to soar despite the number of patrol vehicles, which have been allocated to the force by the Ministry …
“Steps must be taken by the force to take the guns off the streets. Criminals seem to have unfettered access to illegal firearm,” the Minister urged.
The Home Affairs Minister also expressed concern over the number of marine related crimes.
He noted that the recent discovery of the semi- submersible vessel allegedly used in the trafficking of drugs is testament to the need for more active marine patrols, especially in the interior location.
“The Guyana Police Force must take steps to rehabilitate its ailing marine ranks.
The country’s fishermen have been suffering at the hands of pirates, who have attacked, robbed and killed many of them, yet the force lacks the institutional capacity to respond to reports of piracy and to successfully investigate such crimes.”
Rohee urged the junior ranks to use the knowledge and skills they have acquired to contribute to the enhancement of services offered by their respective agencies.
