NEW YORK – Marin Cilic made winning his first major championship look easy in a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory against Kei Nishikori on Monday at the U.S. Open.
It was the first major final for both players. Croatia’s Cilic, 25, was a 2010 Australian Open semifinalist but fell out of the top 30 last year after struggling with his confidence and serving a four-month suspension for a doping violation. He is ranked No. 16 in the world.
Nishikori, 24, of Japan is the first Asian-born man to advance to a Grand Slam singles final.
This was the first final since 2005 without one of the Big Four of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray. Those four have won 36 of the last 38 majors (the exceptions were Juan Martin del Potro in the 2009 U.S. Open and Stan Wawrinka in the 2014 Australian Open).
Cilic beat Federer 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals. Nishikori upset Djokovic 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 after winning two five-set matches against Wawrinka and Milos Raonic.
