Demerara defeated the National U-19 team by seven wickets, while Berbice secured a six-wicket victory over Essequibo when the third and final preliminary round matches of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior Inter County 50-over tournament concluded yesterday in the city.
Having guaranteed a place in the final with victories in their two previous matches, Demerara made it three in a row at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda to remain the only unbeaten team in the competition so far.
Consistent bowling by Demerara aided by poor shot selection sent the U-19 team packing for 125 in 29 overs with only wicketkeeper batsman Kemol Savory offering any resistance on a pitch with preparation moisture. Demerara had few hiccups in overhauling the total as they finished on 127-3 in 19.3 overs.
Pacers Paul Wintz and Seon Daniels, who had to sit out of the preceding game against Berbice due to the flu virus, extracted considerable movement and maintained a decent line, made early inroads after the U-19 team decided to bat. Wintz induced Tagenarine Chanderpaul (00) to nick one through to wicketkeeper Shemroy Barrington with the score on seven, while Daniels sent back Shimron Hetmyer (01) in similar fashion with out addition to the score.
Skipper Brain Sattaur (08) and the talented Keemo Paul (06) looked to repair the early damage with a third wicket stand of 20, before Paul tried to loft Christopher Barnwell over the in-field during the first block of power play overs and was taken at cover. Wintz, generating a fair amount of pace, then knocked back the stumps of Ashkay Homraj (01) with a beauty before Sattaur who had earlier struck Daniels for a straight six followed a wide ball from Barnwell and was taken in the slips leaving the score at 27-5.
Despite the steady procession, Savory wasn’t afraid to play his shots, driving Wintz for a boundary through cover. Sharaz Ramcharran (04) partnered Savory to carry the score to 48 before he was caught and bowled by Barnwell. Savory found a useful ally in Damion Waldron (06) and they added 44 for the sixth wicket which proved to be the best partnership of the innings. Savory drove Barnwell through cover and punched Robin Bacchus to the point boundary while Waldron took a boundary off Barnwell. Left arm spinner Raj Nanan struck a double blow; he first trapped Waldron lbw before removing Steven Sankar (00) in similar manner, but his hat trick ball was kept out by Niall Smith (06).
Savory thumped Steven Jacobs for four and took a couple off Nanan to reached his well deserved half century off 66 balls. He then celebrated by dumping Nanan for a maximum, before Jacobs wrapped up the innings with the wicket of Keon Morris (01) leaving Savory un beaten on 59. He struck five fours and one six. Barnwell and Nanan were the pick of the bowlers with 3-20 each; Wintz took 2-21 while Daniels and Jacobs had one apiece.
The inform Trevon Griffith drove pacer Smith through cover and pulled him for boundaries in the first over to get his team response underway. Bacchus glided Paul to the fine leg boundary before the left handed Griffith chipped and smashed Smith for six over long off the next over. Smith however could have the last laugh, but Sankar floored a catch at point the next delivery. Bacchus drove Smith down the ground for another boundary as both openers seemed untroubled until the left handed Bacchus hooked Morris to Paul on the mid wicket boundary with the score on 85; he departed for 29(4×4).
Had skipper Sattaur brought on his spin bowlers earlier it probably would have made the chase a little more exciting although it would have had little impact on the result. Soon after reaching his half century, Griffith was trapped lbw to off spinner Waldron for 51 which contained seven fours and one six off 43 balls with the score on 102. Barnwell hit Sharaz Ramcharran for four and smashed him for a huge six before leg spinner Sankar bowled Barrington (05) four runs short of their target. Barnwell hit Sankar to the long off boundary to finish unbeaten on 28 (3×4,1×6) while Rajendra Chandrika was not out on one. Waldron, Sankar and Morris claimed one wicket each.
At Everest, Essequibo recovered from 45-5 to post 163 all out in 46.3 overs, batting first. Berbice encountered a few nervous moments before they won the game with 77 balls to spare.
Pacers Keon Joseph and Romario Shepherd produced decent opening spells with Shepherd removing Kevon Boodie and Norman Fredericks, both with out scoring. Joseph made his presence felt by accounting for Royan Fredericks (02) and Ricardo Adams (09). Vijay Surujpaul and Anthony Ifill added 23 for the fifth wicket before Veerasammy Permaul sent back Surujpaul (12). Skipper Anthony Adams joined Ifill and the pair showed some fight with a 39-runs partnership bringing up their team 100 in the process before Narsingh removed Ifill for 29. Adams who was also removed by Deonarine scored a fighting 40 while Eknauth Persaud slammed a robust 45 with three fours and three sixes to beef up the total in the latter stages. Deonarine captured 3-36, Shepherd 3-27 and Joseph 3-39.
Kandasammy Surujnarine and Anthony Bramble featured in an opening stand of 58 to set the tone. The pair timed the ball well and rotated the strike nicely picking boundaries off the loose balls. Surujnarine departed for 31, while Bramble went for 38. Essequibo then picked up the wickets of Devon Clements (23) and Jonathan Foo (17) to give them selves a chance, but man of the match Narsingh Deonarine with 39 not out and Rajiv Ivan (03*) ensured their place in the final which will be played on Saturday at Albion.
Left-arm spinner Anthony Adams snared 2-33.
