Despite numerous warnings, persons are still falling prey to house lot scams. The matter has gone so far that the Ministry of Housing and Water, its operations arm- Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA)–and the Guyana Police Force are now jointly conducting investigations into a major scam unearthed, where various individuals collected monies in exchange of a promise to expedite and deliver house lots.
According to the Ministry yesterday, persons who believed that they were victims of fraud have been coming forward following the publication last week, of an appeal for information leading to the confidence tricksters.
Victims are now saying that they were dealing with persons who claimed that they are relatives and associates of the Ministry’s staffers as well as CH&PA.
Some of the con persons went so far as to pose as CH&PA staffers, taking people to various areas and identifying plots of land that are vacant.
“Despite numerous warnings by the Ministry against entering into these transactions, persons continue to fall prey to this disease,” a statement from the Ministry said yesterday.
This week again, the Ministry noted that residents have a responsibility to safeguard themselves.
Many of the persons being scammed are the ones who applied recently for house lots. They were reportedly approached by persons who claimed that they had contacts or were housing staff members and were in a position to expedite the processing of their land application.
“The Ministry is once again encouraging persons to come in to us and report any instance, whereby any individual or group, would have collected monies from them in an effort to “expedite” or “deliver” any service provided by the Ministry.”
There were even reported cases in the past where scammers even took persons into the Ministry’s compound on Brickdam while they went in to transact business.
They would later present bogus documents that look like a title or transport to the unsuspecting victim. Of course, it was only later on, that the victim would find out that the transaction was a bogus one. By then, the scammers had long disappeared with hundreds of thousands of dollars from the victims.
Government is on a major housing drive distributing more than 5,000 lots over the past three years. However, there are still quite a few applications still on file.
Many persons, who already have a home and are barred from acquiring another under regulations, have also been buying up properties in recent years. Scammers have also been targeting them.
Some of the areas, the scammers have been taking people to, include Diamond and Grove on the East Bank of Demerara, La Parfaite Harmonie and Tuschen, West Demerara.
