At the completion of an eight-week training programme hosted by the Guyana Police Force ‘A’ Division for the youths in Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD), more than 30 women will be taught to “walk the walk” on a catwalk. The men will be trained to become scouts.
The youths will go by the name “Grove Kaleidoscope Group,” said Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken, during the introduction of the programme at the Grove Basketball ground, yesterday.
Hicken explained that during the eight week training programme the children will be exposed to tie-dying, shirt painting and the creation of various items.
The young women will design and wear their creations when showcasing their talents at the end of the programme, during a grand finale.
Classes will be held every Saturday at the ground between 10:00 hours and 14:00 hours. At the end of each class, the children will be treated to a hearty lunch before returning home.
Coordinator of the programme, Indira Hicken, explained that the course is a part of the development project in collaboration with the police to transform the community into a village with skillful people.
“My focus is to develop discipline in the youths and empower them in their own way so that they can be creative,” the Commander said.
“We are forming a scouts group for the boys. Within four weeks they will be outfitted in uniforms. Some time before Christmas we will put them under the scout umbrella.”
