– 85 % of works on canals completed
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker says he is pleased with the progress of work done thus far under the $500 M city clean-up exercise.
During a press conference Friday, the Minister said the pace of implementation of that programme has stepped up.
“I want to say that there has been some revision in some aspects of the project to take on board recommendations and views of the beneficiaries.”
In relation to the cleaning of the seven canals, the Minister said works are 85 percent completed. Speaking about works on the Sussex Street Canal, the Minister said 70 percent of work has been completed, while noting that there are some hindrances. He said there are some illegal structures on the reserve along a section of Sussex Street which is preventing machines from clearing the canal.
“We are concerned over the risk so we are calling on them to cooperate with us and the City Council to ensure that these persons can be removed and the work can be speeded up.”
Work has also commenced on the Princes Street Canal, however there are some issues with debris being left on the shoulders of the canal. Whitaker explained that this issue has been discussed with the contractors and is being addressed.
According to the agreement, the contractor has a stipulated 24 to 48 hours to have debris removed from a work site, but noted that they are forced to leave the debris on the site for several reasons beyond their control.
Work on the Church Street canal is also progressing smoothly while a significant amount of work has been done on the Lamaha Street canal which is about 75 percent completed. Work on the Downer canal has reached 90 percent completion, while the internal drains at Le Repentir cemetery are 80 percent completed. Inmates of the Camp Street Prison are in the process of clearing overgrown bush from Block 7 of the cemetery.
In addition, works are expected to commence on the Ruimveldt, Meadow Bank, and the Lamaha sluices in the coming week.
The Minister said consultations are being held in some communities with the aim of bringing some more communities on board. The Government of Guyana has allocated $1B in its 2014 budget for a Clean-Up my country programme with an allocation of $500M for Georgetown.
