A man who is no stranger to the law has been committed to stand trial at the next sitting of the Berbice High Court for the death of a chain saw operator up the Berbice River. The accused and the victim were from neighbouring villages more than 100 miles from where the crime was committed.
Charles Goodluck, called ‘Charlie’, 65, formerly of Betsy ground, East Canje Berbice, is on trial for the murder of Chandradat Hussain called ‘Deo’, 39, of Goed Bananen Land, East Canje Berbice. The crime was allegedly committed on August 20, last year, at Coredyke Backdam, Kwakwani, Berbice River where they had gone to work.
Goodluck whose preliminary inquiry was heard in the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court was committed to stand trial in the High Court by Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at a special sitting held at the Albion Magistrate’s Court. Goodluck stood motionless when the ruling was read by the magistrate.
Prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sheriff, had called several witnesses during the PI.
Goodluck had first appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Christiansburg Magistrate’s Court and was remanded to prison. He did various jobs including working as a security officer. He had been incarcerated and charged before for various crimes including murder, manslaughter, attempted murder, assault, and wounding with intent.
The body of Hussain, a chain-saw operator, was found hanging in a logging camp at their work location up the Berbice River.
It was first believed that the man had committed suicide by hanging. Investigators however did not believe what they were told at first and mounted an intense investigation that led to the arrest of ‘Charlie’ and the others at the camp.
A port mortem performed on the body by Pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan, at the New Amsterdam Hospital gave the cause of death as ligature strangulation. The police subsequently conducted a further probe which led to Goodluck being charged.
A caution statement, in which the accused confessed to committing the alleged crime, was also admitted into evidence.
