Eager to encourage more golfing in Guyana, Managing Director of NS Mattai ensured that as soon as the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) ground was restored to good playing conditions this weekend its tournament to promote golfing in Guyana should get underway.
Golf Club Secretary/Treasurer (Pandit) Rabindranath Persaud informed executives that the Mattai sponsored tournament tomorrow is special for the LGC as it gives early preparation to local golfers for the two-day Guyana Open tournament billed for November this year. Tee-off is at 09:00hrs.
Club President, David Mohamed expressed his excitement that following today’s Courts sponsored competition, tomorrow will see the Mattai competition being contested and this will certainly condition the minds and bodies of players for the 36-hole round that would be be played at the Guyana Open.
The ground is in great shape and approximately 50 golfers are registered to compete in this weekend’s Flight-arranged medal-play Tournaments.
Four Flights, (meaning four divisions or categories of golfers – based on their handicap) are to be played this weekend. The first Flight – handicappers 0 – 9; Second Flight – handicappers 10 – 18; Third Flight – handicappers 19 – 28; and a Ladies’ Flight.
Trophies for 1st and 2nd placed athletes will be up for grabs in the three Male divisions, while a first prize alone will be available in the Ladies division. A final trophy for Nearest to the Pin, or for Best Net would also be available.
The sponsors will be at the venue today and tomorrow to assist with the distribution of prizes and to also encourage players.
Mr. Mattai commented: “I am very excited for the development of golfing in Guyana. While this is only our first tournament it is the beginning of several sponsorships we would like to do. I look forward to continued support of the Lusignan Golf Club.”
Weather and ground conditions had restricted play at LGC for some three weeks but all’s in place for an exciting weekend of action. Tee off time today is 12:00hrs.
